The Fish River Canyon is second only to the Grand Canyon in terms of size. At 161km long, 27km wide at maximum and up to 549m deep, the Fish River Canyon is definitely one the most impressive features in Namibia's vast Southern region. In the present day the Fish River, whose energy carved this impresssive feature into the landscape, flows only intermittently. Water is ever present though, in a succession of deep pools which are full of fish such as barbel and yellowfish. The formation of the Fish River Canyon can be attributed to four pluvial (wet) periods that occurred in the south-western part of Africa during the last million years, resulting in the powerful run-off of water which eroded this canyon. |
